BSP Launches UAP in Makiling National Scout Reservation Camp

As part of the Urban Agriculture Project in partnership with the Department of Agriculture (DA), the Boy Scouts of the Philippines (BSP) launches its vegetable garden in Makiling National Scout Reservation Camp on 10 June 2020.

BSP National President Roberto M. Pagdanganan together with BSP Secretary General Rogelio S. Villa, Jr. graced the event. Present also are Dr. Joel Adorada (Senior Agriculturist and Research Coordinator of the Los Baños National Crop Research, Development and Production Support Center), Regional Director J. Rizal C. Pangilinan (World Scout Bureau- Asia Pacific Support Centre), Regional Scout Director Rodolfo C. Pangilinan (BSP Southern Tagalog and Bicol Region), Regional Scout Director Ramil S. Borbon (BSP National Capital Region) and Camp Manager Eduardo Jaime Drilon (Makiling National Scout Reservation Camp).

NP Pagdanganan emphasized the importance of this undertaking in order to promote food security and stability, especially during times like the COVID-19 Pandemic. “This development in our Scout Camp will also secure our source of seeds as we roll-out the UAP to our Scouts nationwide”, he added.

SG Villa enjoined all of BSP’s Regional Offices, Scout Camps and Local Councils to start developing areas for planting of vegetables. “Our Scouts will not just learn the relevance of food security and sustainability, they will also enjoy preparing areas for planting vegetables, caring for it, and eventually harvesting and eating it! As provided in BSP National Office Memorandum No. 35, s. 2020, Scouts who will join this project will also be able to achieve certain merit badges (for Boy and Senior Scouts) and quadrant awards (for Rover Scouts). The Better World Framework is also incorporated for this project”, he said.

On behalf of the DA-Bureau of Plant Industry, Dr. Adorada thanked the Boy Scouts of the Philippines for its desire to help the DA in its UAP and Plant, Plant, Plant Program.

RD Pangilinan assured that the World Scout Bureau-Asia Pacific Support Centre supports this initiative of the BSP and discussed its possible adoption for a more extensive assistance to be provided to the national scout organization.
