September 25, 2017 is just another cloudy day in downtown Manila, but not to the fifty (50) boy scouts who were invited to spend the day with Ivan Dorschner. The Boy Scouts of the Philippines – National Office gladly welcomed the said artist of GMA-7 as he finally realized his wish to celebrate his 27th birthday with the scouts.
Ivan is also a scout, but not an ordinary one. He has reached the peak of Scouting advancement, the Eagle Scout rank, which is considered a milestone of accomplishment—perhaps without equal—that is recognized across the country and in the whole world. According to the Boy Scouts of America (BSA) Web page: ‘“Eagle Scout” is not just a rank or award; it is a state of being. Those who earned it as boys continue to earn it every day as men. That is why an Eagle Scout IS an Eagle Scout—not was.’
He considers scouting a big part of who he is. He shared to the scouts his scouting experiences that revolved around outdoor and survival skills, character buiding and team spirit. He recalled how fun and exciting were the camp outs, the activities and the memories he shared with his scout comrades. Ivan also expressed his interest in witnessing some of the BSP’s upcoming events such as the National Rover Moot in Camarines Sur and the 6th ASEAN Jamboree in Tagum City this coming October and November respectively. He even shared his plans of organizing a simple camping activity with these Scouts.
Ivan requested a Scout to recite the BSP’s Scout Oath and Law. He then pointed out some of the differences between the BSP and the BSA, but ended up saying that what really matters is the brotherhood that unites the Scouts regardless where we came from. The scouts enjoyed the parlor games prepared by Ivan and his friends. Then they happily greeted their Kuya Ivan with an ‘Ivan clap’ and ‘baby shark’ dance presentation. Ivan ate and laughed with them in a ‘boodle fight’. The scouts were surprised when Ivan personally handed to each one of them modest yet essential gifts such as pin lights, caps, and school supplies. This has been a wonderful and memorable day to the scouts and to Ivan as well. Ivan, on the other hand, gratefully received a message from BSP’s Secretary General Rogelio S. Villa, Jr., a Binoy statuette and a carabao slide as simple birthday gifts from the Boy Scouts of the Philippines.
