SW Award: Iloilo Council holds 1st SW Award Discovery

Iloilo City, ILOILO – As a response to the Boy Scouts of the Philippines’ (BSP) active implementation of the World Programmes under the Better World Framework (BWF) of the World Organization of the Scout Movement (WOSM), Iloilo Council conducted its 1st Scouts of the World (SW) Award Discovery on 27-29 January at BSP Iloilo Council Headquarters, Iloilo City.

Equipped with the technical knowledge about the program after having been trained during BSP’s 1st SW Award Seminar last November 2016, Local SW Award Coordinators Leo D. Lao and Eric Cerdaña spearheaded the conduct of the SW Award Discovery in Iloilo Council, with support from their Council Scout Executive, Mr. Eric U. There are many goals that a Scout could achieve in engaging themselves in the SW Award Discovery. Aside from strengthening the range of skills in community-based management and leadership, the experiences they gained can create change and can help the lives of other people.

Iloilo Council had begun its own story of involvement in the SW Award Programme, one of the flagship programs of WOSM which BSP adopted in 2014. Like notes and pieces, each had a special role to play. All did their part quite very well. Every action is considered as one step closer to the goal, to create a better world.

During the workshop, the program was introduced to the participants, including the 17 Sustainable Development Goals of the United Nations, where Scouts were oriented on the basic requirements and the path to the SW Award journey. The SW Award passport where introduced to keep track of Scout’s journey from Discovery to Voluntary Service.

The activity focused on the community immersion. Scouts were divided into four crews and went into different areas – risk prone areas, coastal areas, interaction with financially challenged families and observed livelihood initiatives of the community which highlights the lives of people in Barangay Camlumpang. After the exploration activity, the Scouts together with their respective counsellors, reflected on their exploration and shared their own understanding, realizations and responses about the areas they visited through an exibition. They created posters which represented their ideas and solutions for the conflicts in the community they visited. The Scouts also rendered another service by re-painting the Iloilo Council Headquarters.

In the Skills Workshop, the Scouts were given an opportunity on how to manage their emotions, challenging prejudices and decision-making. These can be a tool in overcoming different challenges in life and also in the implementation of different projects and programs. The Scouts also created their personal action plan and project planning for the future conduct of their own voluntary services.

The Discovery is a step closer towards attaining the SW Award. Thus, this only proves that Scouts are dedicated and ignited in creating a better world. As what Lord Baden Powell said, “The most worthwhile thing is to try to put happiness into the lives of others.”
